Adventure is Accessible exists to eliminate the barriers between people with disabilities and the natural world. We do that by leading real outdoor adventures in real wild places, building a community of explorers of every ability, and developing nature spaces where everyone can wander freely.
We celebrate capability, not limitation. The healing pull of a forest, a river, an open sky — none of it should be gated behind a curb, a stair, or a trail that quits where the pavement ends.

Trailblazers: Adaptive Hike at Black Hoof Park
All abilities welcome. We'll move at a friendly pace along the park's gently sloped, paved lake trail — a 1.5-mile total out-and-back from the Stone Wall Shelter to the Lenexa Dam, with rest stops and no rush. Adaptive explorers, please bring a companion or caregiver along for the adventure. Park near the Stone Wall Shelter; restrooms, free parking, and covered shelter access are on site. Every registered group is entered for a chance to win a Huckleberry Tandem Hiker, awarded at year’s end.

Wandering Woods.
Our vision for a permanently accessible nature destination in the Kansas City region — where accessibility will be the foundation, not a footnote.
Most trails run out of pavement long before the view.
Accessible outdoor places are usually accessible by retrofit — a ramp bolted on, a paved loop near the parking lot, a cabin with one wide door. The wildness stays out of reach, and families learn to plan around what won’t work.
Wandering Woods would start from the opposite direction. Every structure, trail, dock, and gathering space would be designed step-free from the first sketch — not adapted, but built that way. Trail grades would be held at or under 5%, and routes would connect the cabins to the water, the greenhouse, and the event center without a single stair.
It’s the destination our monthly adaptive events are pointing toward: somewhere people could simply arrive, stay, explore, and belong — on any ordinary weekend, without asking permission first.
Events Center
A barrier-free venue planned to host weddings, retreats, adaptive sports clinics, and community gatherings — designed for step-free movement from the parking area to the dance floor.
Treehouse suites
Multiple elevated treehouse suites reached by gently ramped walkways — with roll-in bathrooms, accessible kitchens, and canopy views that usually require a staircase.
Cabins
Ground-level cabins with open floor plans, roll-in showers, and zero barrier entries.
Wandering Paths
A network of paved trails planned at grades of 5% or less, linking every building to the lake, the meadow, and the woods along step-free routes.
Greenhouse & gardens
A glasshouse and raised garden beds set at roll-up height, with sensory planting chosen for scent, texture, and sound as much as for color.
Pond pavilion & dock
An open-air pavilion overlooking the water, plus a boardwalk dock reaching out from the shoreline for adaptive paddling and fishing.
Accessibility that’s here to stay.
Wandering Woods would be developed, financed, and operated by mission-aligned partners under a permanent, recorded accessibility covenant. What keeps it barrier-free isn’t who owns it — it’s that covenant, binding the land itself so every trail, cabin, and gathering space stays accessible no matter who runs it. Adventure is Accessible would deliver the programming and hold the public-benefit access the covenant guarantees.
A covenant on the land
A permanent, recorded accessibility covenant would run with the property — so the barrier-free standard outlives any owner or operator.
Public access, protected
Trails open to the public on most days, with a meaningful share of capacity reserved for subsidized stays and program days — access Adventure is Accessible would hold and safeguard.

Adventure is Accessible brings the guided outings, adaptive equipment, and Trailblazers community to the place it helped shape.

Building Wandering Woods — land plus construction — would cost an estimated $5.7 million, financed by mission-aligned partners that would develop and operate it. That keeps the destination’s development entirely separate from the charitable gifts that fund our programs and events.
Charitable giving to Adventure is Accessible stays with our mission — guided adventures, adaptive equipment, and scholarships that keep Trailblazers events free — never the build.

Wandering Woods is a vision in development, not a constructed facility.
